At Eastern Therapies Acupuncture Bondi Junction, we often explain to our patients that in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Kidney is considered the “root of life.” It stores our vital essence (Jing) and governs growth, fertility, vitality, and healthy aging. When Kidney Qi (energy) is strong, we enjoy resilience, vitality, and longevity. But as we age, Kidney Qi naturally declines—leading to common signs of aging such as greying hair, weaker bones and joints, hearing changes, dry skin, and frequent urination.
Because the Kidney system is closely linked with bones, teeth, hair, and ears, any weakness here can show up as those age-related changes. Fortunately, TCM provides natural ways to support Kidney health, slow down decline, and promote graceful aging.
Acupuncture and Kidney Health: What the Research Says
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects millions worldwide, and many people are seeking supportive therapies that may assist with kidney function alongside conventional care. Acupuncture, with its long history in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is now being studied for its potential role in renal support.
What Does the Research Show?
One preliminary randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigated the effects of acupuncture on kidney function in people with CKD:
- Yu et al., 2017
- Design: Single-blinded RCT with 59 participants diagnosed with CKD (stages not specified).
- Intervention: Patients were randomized to receive either real (verum) acupuncture or sham acupuncture for 12 weeks.
- Findings: The acupuncture group showed a decrease in serum creatinine and an increase in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) compared with the sham group.
- Reference: PMID: 28422526
While these results are encouraging, the authors emphasized that this was a preliminary study. They recommend larger and more robust RCTs to confirm the findings and better understand how acupuncture may assist renal function.
Why This Matters
Kidney health is complex, and while acupuncture is not a replacement for medical treatment, it may offer an adjunctive approach to support wellbeing. By potentially influencing circulation, inflammation, and stress pathways, acupuncture could complement conventional kidney care.
Simple Daily Practices for Kidney Vitality
- Warm Salt Foot Baths
In TCM, the Kidney meridian begins on the sole of the foot. A warm salt foot soak helps improve circulation, draw energy downward, and gently replenish the Kidney system. This is especially important in winter, when Kidney energy is most vulnerable. - Nourishing Foods
Black-coloured foods are traditionally linked to Kidney nourishment. Black sesame seeds, black beans, black rice, and seaweed are rich in minerals and antioxidants that support longevity, strong hair, and steady energy. - Acupuncture & Acupressure
At Eastern Therapies Acupuncture Bondi Junction, we select points along the Kidney meridian to restore balance, boost energy flow, and support overall vitality. Regular acupuncture tune-ups can help maintain energy, reduce signs of aging, and improve resilience. For self-care, applying gentle pressure to Kidney 1 (Yongquan, on the sole of the foot) or Kidney 3 (Taixi, near the ankle) can help replenish Kidney Qi. - Herbal Medicine
Classical Kidney-tonifying herbs such as He Shou Wu and Gou Qi Zi (goji berry) have long been used in TCM to preserve vitality and support healthy aging. However, formulas must be individually tailored—self-prescription is discouraged, as inappropriate herbs can create imbalance.
