Thyroid Awareness Day was on the 25th of May.

Thyroid health is a really important topic because an over or under-active thyroid can really affect how we feel and function.

Thyroid hormones are responsible for controlling the basic activity of each cell in the body, including metabolism, growth and development, temperature regulation, heart rate, and production of proteins.

Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid does not produce enough thyroid hormones. It can be caused by Iodine deficiency or Hashimoto’s. Its symptoms include fatigue, dry skin, constipation, brain fog, cold sensitivity, and weight gain.

Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid releases too much of its hormones, Grave’s disease is one of the causes. Symptoms can include anxiety, nervousness, frequent bowel motions, rapid heartbeat, weight loss, and increased appetite.

In TCM, we consider a hyperactive thyroid related to having excess heat and also related to an imbalance of the liver with blockages of energy in the thyroids. While on the other hand, a hypoactive thyroid is considered an imbalance of excess and deficiency leading to weight gain and low metabolism.

We tailor each treatment according to each patient’s condition as it is never one size fits all. Acupuncture will be used to balance the internal organs and herbal medicine may also be used for various symptoms.
