Autumn

The autumn season see us eating more warming foods such as soups and casseroles. We should be also looking at foods which are pungent in nature such as garlic and onions. Meats should be cooked for longer period of time to get the maximum nutrients for the colder months ahead. Keep in mind we should be looking out for foods which have white colour in it as it resembles the metal element of the yin Lung and yang Large Intestine. This is the time to enjoy the last days of the Summer sun and help prevent skin conditions such as allergies, eczema, psoriasis and asthma and improve our immunity.

Here are list of foods one should be considering for autumn:

Fruits – apples, pears and persimmons are great for their fibre content to help clear the gut. Pineapple, lemon and grapefruit are good for this time of year to keep the body fluids up.

Vegetables – cabbage, daikon, horseradish, dark green vegetables like kale and broccoli, orange coloured vegetables such as carrots and pumpkin are high in beta-carotene which is great to boost the immune system

Herbs – marshmallow root, flax seed, and fenugreek are mucilaginous which help clear out old mucus deposits in the large intestine and replaces with a clean moist coat. Cinnamon, sage, rosemary and flat-head parsley are also great herbs to start cooking with especially in roasts and bakes.

Grains and nuts – oats, millet, and rice are few grains to mention to help with fibre, while eating nuts will keep the body moist and prevent dryness from happening.

Meats – looking at turkey, duck and even other game meats such as rabbit and venison are good for this time of year. For fish look at the more oilier kinds such as mackerel, snapper, scallops, salmon and oysters to keep the body moist.
