Heavy menses

Beautiful caucasian woman lying with hot water bagOur patient’s primary complaint when she came to see us was chronic indigestion, anemia, headaches, fatigue, dizziness, poor vision and eczema. During the initial interview we identified that she had been experiencing very heavy menstrual bleeding for a number of years, known as menorrhagia, which accounted for many of these symptoms.

According to the Mayo Clinic, menorrhagia is the medical term for menstrual periods with abnormally heavy or prolonged bleeding and while in some cases, the cause of heavy menstrual bleeding is unknown, a number of conditions may cause menorrhagia. Common causes include hormonal imbalance, dysfunction of the ovaries, uterine fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis and IUD’s as well as other common diseases (such as cancer), medications and complications of pregnancy. Our patient had been to see a women’s health clinic and been given the oral contraceptive pill Marvelon.

After the initial consultation and acupuncture treatment our patient was prescribed a modified classical herbal formula commonly used to treat many kinds of bleeding presentations. Due to its elegant composition, this herbal prescription was able to address the bleeding disorder as well as most of our patient’s primary symptoms including the chronic indigestion, abdominal pain, dizziness, blurry vision and headaches by regulating menstrual blood flow, supporting digestive function, maintaining nervous and endocrine function to reduce exhaustion and fatigue.

After only one month taking the herbal prescription our patient called to say the volume of her menstrual period was reduced to two days of heavy bleeding. She continued taking the modified formula and after three months was no longer bleeding heavily during her period, and said “I had the best period for [ever since] many years after taking the herbal medicine”. Our recommendation to address the primary symptoms and regulate menstrual flow was to continue the herbal formula every month in the week prior to the period. We also recommend that patients organise a medical investigation with their GP or gynaecologist to determine the cause of the excess bleeding.

Ammenorrhea

ammeno

Like a lot of women in their late thirties our patient came off the pill earlier this year in the hope of falling pregnant naturally. Five months on, she came to see us for treatment as she still hadn’t had a menstrual period, was experiencing regular outbreaks of acne and felt sluggish and fatigued. She also realised that her sister’s history of PCOS and difficulty falling pregnant may provide us with some clues as to her current situation even though she had not had any tests done herself. Our patient came for treatment every fortnight for two months during which we used a combination of techniques including constitutional acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, moxibustion therapy and prescribed herbal medicine. After five treatments she reported her first menstrual period in seven months and was ecstatic! There was also a reduction in the outbreaks of acne and a much needed improvement in the quality of her sleep. Like our patient, many women who suffer from amenorrhea have low oestrogen levels and may not be ovulating and the use of acupuncture, moxibustion and herbal medicine can assist by improving the balance of hormones and regulating the reproductive organs to create a stable environment in the uterus for conception.

Ammenorhea

Many women who suffer from amenorrhea see a gynaecologist and may not be ovulating. Acupuncture, moxibustion and herbal medicine can assist with this condition. Below are some cases that have recently presented and been treated successfully in our clinic.

Case 1: Recently, this patient came to see us due to absence of her menstrual period for six months after coming off the Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP), which she had taken for 10 years. She also had high stress levels, anxiety with dull neck, shoulder and back pain. The patient was treated with acupuncture and moxibustion for five treatments over a two month period, supplemented with two weeks of herbal medicine. After five treatments she experienced a reduction in anxiety levels and her period resumed and an added benefit of the treatment was that she gained 2kg.

Case 2: This patient came to our clinic as she had been trying to conceive naturally for ten months since coming off the OCP, but had not had a period during that time. Like many women she had been on the OCP since she was a teenager, for over ten years. Recent blood tests and ultrasound had confirmed anovulation, however her AMH (egg reserve) result was very high. This patient had developed a thyroid condition and also suffered from anxiety. She was treated with regular weekly acupuncture, moxibustion and herbal medicine and after five treatments her period resumed.

Case 3: Since coming off the OCP four months ago, this patient was trying to conceive but had experienced only two periods in this time with very scanty flow and long cycles. She had been diagnosed as having mild PCOS and came to us to try to regulate her menstrual cycle. She received only one acupuncture treatment supplemented with herbal medicine and her period returned.

Case 4: Early in 2014, this patient came to see us as she had had only two periods during the past year after coming off the OCP. They were very light spotting for only one or two days. Three months previously, the gynaecologist had diagnosed PCOS and her AMH result was considered too high. After one treatment her period returned of normal to heavy flow with some pain and discomfort. She received weekly treatment with acupuncture and moxibustion supplemented with herbal medicine and the second period arrived on time and with much less pain.

Case 5: This patient had only three cycles in the past six months since coming off the OCP, each one very light with 40+ day cycles. Blood tests didn’t indicate PCOS, however the next step was to confirm this by ultrasound. She experienced PMT, cramping, acne and was unsure if blood tests confirmed ovulation. The patient was treated with acupuncture, moxibustion and herbs for eight weeks after which she found out she was pregnant.
